Endocrinology, by what it implies, is the study of the endocrine system and its functions. Is that all? I don’t know either, I am little clueless of what this word contains.  But as I browse along my books and references about this Endocrinology, I found out that there are some things I already know which, surprisingly, were related to the subject. Insert Meme Here: Why You Don't Know?!

As we were asked to write something out of our analysis of what such a topic means, I chose not to branch out much on what I already know so I decided to share the common knowledge we have.  Take a read, Let us do the Countdown with song titles to liven it up!

There is this hormone (by the way, hormones are what are being talked about in Endocrinology) called “Somatotropin” that stimulates the growth of bones, muscles, and other organs.  The releasing organ is the Pituitary gland. This hormone dictates how much growth one will have, depending on the level of release of this hormone to the body parts involved. Gigantism and Dwarfism are some of the common diseases related to the hormone. Gigantism is the result of excessive release of Somatotropin along with other genetic factors, and the exact opposite results to Dwarfism. The Guinness Book of World Records now holds to have Sultan Kosen as the tallest man on Earth with a height of 8'1" and Chandra Bahadur Dangi with 22 inch-height.

With the myth of jumping high upon new year's eve countdown, I just dont know, what I would say is that "I, myself did it" which makes quite a good answer when people ask me of what I do to grow this tall. LOL

Our physique is undeniably one of the contributing factors to our social life, thereby given significant attention. But did you know that, our metabolism, which dictates our rate of absorption of nutrients from the food we eat, is also controlled by an endocrine gland? It is the Thyroid gland. It secretes Thyroid hormones which does the job. Conditions of low secretions is called hypothyroidism which causes the slow rate of metabolism and hyperthyroidism  as the exact opposite. Another common condition known to people is Goiter, which is basically the enlargement of the thyroid gland. I have seen real life goiter patients which are commonly teachers. Pity did flew across my mind that I realized it may be a challenge for me to continue to aspire for my dream to teach, as my profession in the near future. I salute my professors especially my elementary school teachers for carrying such burden to teaching that they themselves risk their health just to shout at under-disciplined and naughty pupils.

One of the endocrine glands is the adrenal gland. Divided into two, comes adrenal cortex and medulla. It is a fact that, in the adrenal cortex, one hormone with the identity of Aldosterone is being secreted to regulate the flow and concentration of solutes in the body through urine and water regulation. Ions are already involved here; a very good example is Sodium ion. Regarding this, there were ion and electrolyte drinks which claims to contain essential electrolytes needed by the body in exchange with strenuous activity like playing basketball, sports and stuffs like that. A very good example and a famous one too, is the trademarked drink Gatorade. Researching about the said beverage's history, one site it was designed, following a request from Gators football assistant coach Ray Graves, to aid athletes by acting as a hydrating replacement for body fluids lost during physical exertion in hot weather in 1965. New brands make their way to claim the same purpose, such as Pocari Sweat and Lipton. Lets drink to that!
